Hear from some of our members why they decide to purse Engineering or join SWE!
"There are so many reasons I am in Engineering, and even more reasons I am in SWE. I became interested in engineering because I had an amazing role model growing up. My mom was and still is the smartest person I know. From a young age she made sure to teach me math in ways that I understood, and if I did not understand, she would find a new way to teach me. My mom made math and science fun, and as a result, I became a STEM kid. I absolutely love being in the engineering field, but as a woman it can get lonely to be surrounded by so many men all the time. It is usually unintentional, but women in STEM are often ostracized from the men in STEM for arbitrary reasons. Because of this, I joined SWE. SWE has improved my relationships with both men and women in STEM greatly. I now have a close support system of women who understand my struggles, and because I have a support system, I have the confidence to talk to non-women in STEM. SWE has given me professional skills, technical skills, but the most important thing SWE has given me is the confidence to be myself in this field and to reach out to others and build relationships. SWE has changed my life, and I hope we can be a part of your life too!"

"Before I enrolled at NIU, I was very uncertain of what I wanted to major in. I knew I enjoyed math and physics, and I knew I wanted to go into a field where I could help people. I decided to become an engineer because it encapsulated all of my interests and would offer me a future where I could develop technologies and systems that would lead to better living for a large population"

"I decided to join SWE my freshman year to meet other women in engineering. SWE quickly became something so much more than just meeting other women in engineering. My second semester in SWE I started volunteering at G-Force and had the best time getting to work with the girls on their passion and interests in engineering and STEM. Every week I volunteered I realized how important it was for the next generation to see role models in engineering that look like them. Having a role model that looked like me was something I didn’t have until after starting college and volunteering at SWE’s outreach events gives me the opportunity to be a role model for the next generation of girls wanting to pursue engineering."

Engineering was not a known career in my family. I had no knowledge of engineering until high school. In high school, I was given a chance to take a course on the basics of engineering. This class was mostly hands-on learning which caught my attention. I ended up loving the class resulting in taking it all 4 years. I gained a lot of knowledge that included summer programs with different companies as well. I really appreciate getting the opportunity to discover engineering and grow my passion."
