I am an Engine-artist

No, I do not draw engines, well maybe not ALL the time. When I say I am an Engine-Artist I mean I am an engineer and an artist wrapped into one. A lot of the time people see engineers as people who follow math and logic, very right brained and type A. While a lot can be that, people are not always just one. I am both mathematical and magical. I am organized yet in chaos.

Having multiple passions can be extremely difficult to juggle, especially getting a degree. Getting a degree in engineering is hard enough as it is without tacking on an extra major or minor that has absolutely NO overlapping classes, yet I still decided to do it. It is hard, but worth it. My degree is Mechanical Engineering BS with a minor in Art and Design.

The main way I juggle this is choosing classes that might align with both of my areas of study. For my art minor I took 2 industrial design classes and a scientific illustration course. Industrial design is the part of product design that has to do with appearance, it’s the step pre-engineer. Scientific illustration is just being able to look at things in life and draw them on paper. The photo to the right is an illustration I made, of an iridescent beetle, for that class. Both art classes were able to assist me in engineering, drafting in particular. If I have an idea in my minds I can realisticly sketch up a rendering within a minute or two to get the idea across. Not a lot of people know how to get things in their brain onto paper.

Not only was art able to help my engineering but engineering was also able to help my art. Learning computer aided design (CAD) revolutionized art for me. I was able to create 3d renderings from nothing and it fascinated me. If I create things with 3d modeling, I can even use those as references when I am drawing something. I was always afraid of digital art and taking that leap but engineering gave me the confidence and experience to really take a deep dive.
