International Women in Engineer Day!

International Women in Engineer Day is on June 23 of every year! Celebrate with us as we present some of our members of Society of Women In Engineer at Northern Illinois University.

Meet Courtney Shimp.

Year: Junior

Major: Mechanical Engineering

"I am currently doing a six month co-op at Collins Aerospace as a manufacturing engineer. I'm in Collins ISR and Space Systems department focusing on Additive Manufacturing and shop floor improvement. I love getting to focus on additive manufacturing because I really enjoy getting to work in different CAD programs and see the three-dimensional CAD design come to life through 3D printing. As well as the shop floor improvement and seeing how the different changes to the assembly process affect the end products. I'm really excited to see where this internship takes me over the next few months and years with my career as an engineer in the aerospace industry!"

Meet Emily Romancew.

Year: Junior

Major: Mechanical Engineering

"This semester, I worked hard inside and outside of the classroom as a student-athlete at NIU. Recently, I was recognized by our conference, the Mid-American Conference (MAC), as an Academic All-MAC, an award that goes to student-athletes who participated in at least 50% of the tournaments during the season and maintained a GPA of 3.20 and above. It was an honor to receive this award and I am inspired to continue my tremendous efforts as a female student-athlete studying in STEM."

Meet Amanda Zaverdas.

Year: Junior

Major: Mechanical Engineering

"This summer I started working at Collins Aerospace as a mechanical engineering co-op. I’m working on the military legacy programs in the generator department. It’s overall a really cool experience and definitely has me excited to start my career once I graduate."

Meet María Corzo.

Year: Junior

Major: Biomedical Engineering

"During this summer I am taking my first BME class, it’s an intro class but it cements my love for my major. Despite being a short summer class I spend time studying and trying my best. It is personally special for me to do well in classes and getting recognized by things like having been placed in the Dean’s list or getting awards. I have been a part of the Dean’s list for the last two semesters."

Meet Jacki Wilson.

Year: Junior/Senior

Major: Mechanical Engineering

"I am currently working at Navistar as an intern in the Research & Development team over the summer. Navistar is the holding company of International Harvester, and are in charge of designing and producing International brand trucks and IC school buses. As an intern at Navistar, I will be taking a trip to the Navistar Proving Grounds in Indiana in around a month and have the chance to drive automatic and manual semi-trucks without the need of a CDL, under the supervision of an instructor. Working as an intern at Navistar has opened doors for professional development and personal growth that I didn't even know were there!"

Meet Cindy Gomez.

Graduated May 2022

Electrical Engineering

"I graduated in May of 2022 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. I am so lucky to say throughout my college career I was able to do three different internships with three different companies. My last round of internships was with Collins Aerospace. I’m so happy to say I landed a full time position as a Systems Engineer at Collins Aerospace! I am so thankful to NIU SWE and NIU SHPE for their help through my college career. None of this would have been possible without them! "

Meet Ashely Caracheo. Year: Junior

Major: Engineering Technology Emphasis -Industrial management and Technology Subemphasis-Electronics

“This summer I was accepted for my first internship after my sophomore year! My first couple of days I was overwhelmed with inspiration working along side professional engineers trying to take in as much information as I possibly can. Then as the weeks went on, I was assigned to major projects with quality and continuous improvement learning 5S processes and LEAN strategies. I’m excited to see what else I will gain for the rest of my internship!”

Meet Jade Wilson. Year: Junior

Major: Mechanical Engineering

“I am heading into my third year at NIU as a Mechanical Engineering major. I am on the executive board is SWE and EWH, and I am a community advisor for the dorms at NIU. Over the summer I have an Industrial Engineering internship at Fluid Power Energy. At this job I am learning simulation software, doing inventory research, and learning how to do time studies, and use those time studies to improve building efficiency. I am learning so much and I am really enjoying my time at this internship!”
