SWE SUMMER RECAP

“I worked at Collins Aerospace in Windsor Locks, CT this summer as an advanced manufacturing engineer intern. I worked in Power and Controls Air Management Systems department where my work focused around process control in sheet metal fabrication” - Courtney, President

“This summer, I participated in research alongside Dr. Vahabzadeh at NIU. We worked with the chemistry and biology departments on developing and understanding biomaterials. Specifically, we research the biocompatibility of several titanium implants as well as brushite cement, a type of biomaterial used for vertebrae fracture healing. I also played in several golf tournament all over the USA and Canada.” - Emily, External Vice President

“I worked at CNH Industrial this summer, which is the company behind both Case & New Holland Agriculture and Construction products. My internship was in the Applied Mechanics and Durability laboratory doing fatigue and failure testing on various tractors. Had a blast rigging equipment up to test whether it could withstand the forces required for work in the field!” - Jacki, Internal Vice President

"At ideal I get to do a variety of different projects. I mainly am here to help out the product design engineers! I got to head my own design which was cool, im still working on it. Im also working on a redesign for a product that might come out soon! I helped with 3d models and 2d sketches and product organization and creation!" - Naomi, Sponsorship Coordinator

“As Dr. Tan’s undergraduate research assistant I was initially tasked on creating sample homework answers by using python and handcalcs to teach how to use coding for homework in a way that visually resembles a handwritten assignment.”- Maria, Secretary

“I worked at Generac on the Engine Development Team. I was able to work with engineers and lab technicians to solve engine issues and was given the opportunity to practice my analytical, 3D modeling, and computer programming skills. I was also able to work with other interns and create a network of people with different interests and backgrounds to work with.” - Jade, Social Media Chair

“This Spring/Summer I had the pleasure to work as a Operations Strategy Co-Op for Collins Aerospace (RTX) in Electric Power Systems located at Rockford, Illinois! During the duration of my internship, I was able to work on many projects that challenged my technical skills while learning various software systems. I created pivot tables by using Excel macros to extract and analyze data from SAP-ERP system and utilized NXCAD to analyze 3D models for various Integrated Drive Generators, Variable Frequency Generators, and Ram Air Turbine assemblies to create make-part chain assemblies from various Collins Aerospace make-part locations. I also developed and managed Operations Strategy Work Transfer tracker by using Excel, and analyzed engineering blueprints for various manufactured parts and assemblies. Overall my experience was not only very knowledgeable, but also took on the opportunity to grow my network while working with many experienced professionals that have now become mentors!” - Ashley, Alumni Relations Chair
